ABATE OF DELAWARE, INC.
STATE LEGISLATIVE COORDINATOR
MAY 24, 2007
GARY "HILDY" HILDERBRAND

This is an update regarding Senate Bill 46, the Mandatory Motorcycle Helmet legislation that was introduced by Senator Gary Simpson, Republican, from Milford.
Dave Breakiron, Delaware's Motorcycle Riders Foundation representative, recently had the opportunity to speak with Senator Margret Rose Henry, Democrat, from Wilmington, who is the Chair of the Senate Public Safety Committee.
Senator Henry indicated that the "People have spoken" and she will not let the legislation move forward in committee for a hearing.
This is a victory for the entire motorcycling community.
She has requested that we continue our e-mail, letter writing, and phone call
campaign opposing this legislation with specific emphasis on letting Senator Simpson know about our concerns as well as all other legislators.
We must not rest on our laurels, as all legislation introduced is technically alive during the General Assembly period it is introduced in until withdrawn, defeated, passed and signed, or vetoed.
The current General Assembly period we are in began January 2007 and runs through June 30, 2008. Therefore, Senate Bill 46 can see action any time between now and next June.
Keep those cards and letters coming in!
I would like to personally thank everyone and every group that as answered the call to defeat this legislation.
No one group or individual can claim victory, but because of ABATE of Delaware, Inc, the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, Delaware Freedom Riders, many other groups and individuals, we have been successful to date.
I'd like to especially thank Chainsaw, New Castle County ABATE Web Master, and Shirley Vandever/GirlGeek, for their assistance in getting my call to action out to all our freedom fighting sisters and brothers across the nation.
When I received Senator Henry's response to my e-mail requesting a meeting, whether or not she would sit on the legislation or hold a hearing, and specifically what her position was regarding Senate Bill 46, her Administrative Aide responded that the senator had read my e-mail and I needed to share my concerns with the sponsor of the legislation.
She pissed me off!
I replied that I posed specific questions to the senator, and desired specific responses to each one.
Upon her refusal to return any answers I wrote to Chainsaw and said, "let's pour on the heat."
He and GirlGeek sent out notices to people and organizations all over America, and they flooded legislative offices with mail.
California, Florida, Connecticut, Minnesota, Michigan, Montana, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and many, many others e-mailed and wrote with well reasoned, and thoughtful comments to our legislators.
Because of people and organizations throughout the United States that are active on motorcycling issues, we proved once again, that we are very well organized and effective.
Thank you Chainsaw and GirlGeek for everything you did.
And to those of you who did nothing, you are welcome to enjoy the freedoms others have provided you.
