In an effort to compile talking points for discussion when visiting with your rep and other information that may be helpful, I am asking that you post suggestions for a "how to" handbook here.
What are the areas you could help with when meeting with your representative? Is there specific information you feel you need to be more familiar with? Post your questions or suggestions here and we'll use them when putting together the handbook.
Thanks,

When meeting with a representative or a candidate as a MRO representative and he/she expresses to you that they support motorcyclists rights and are for helmet law repeal, does the MRO rep. leave him/her with a, "I'll speak with the board and suggest they support you"?
I wonder if all candidates will tell you what you want to hear in the heat of an election, therefore what exactly constitutes a "pledge of support" and what do we tell them we can do for them to get them elected if they support us once in position.

Obviously, we want to know whether or not they support helmet law repeal. Are we to discuss any plans to promote motorcyle awareness?
Do we discuss exempting motorcycles from tolls? Do we discuss mopeds?

All good questions!

In general, I would say that it is wise to coordinate your efforts with your SMRO. This will help insure you don't duplicate efforts or work against another effort.
As far as taking anyone at their word, I don't think you have much of a choice. If you feel you're getting an honest answer, go with it. If we work to get someone into office, and they don't live up to their word, we can let them know we will work to get them OUT of office.

If there is legislation ironed out before you talk with a candidate, by all means discuss it. If there is not, talking about the types of issues we support or do not support is appropriate. I probably wouldn't get into anything like mopeds right now as that is not really a primary issue this early before the session and will be addressed if/when it becomes one.
I know that you posted the questions to be considered for the handbook, but I wanted to give you a basic idea of how we will likely approach it in the handbook.
Thank you for taking the time to post these questions. These are the types of things that people will want guidance on. I appreciate it. And I hope others will post the kinds of questions or situations they anticipate and would like suggestions on handling.
