I talked to Jim Cannon in Richmond and he has learned that HB 2585 (Motorcycle helmets; exempted from wearing thereof on certain byways and highways) will be heard in the House Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee THIS FRIDAY - January 26 at 9:00 a.m in House Room C. Please write each of the committee members and ask for support, and please plan to make the committee meeting on Friday if you possibly can.

Here's a link to the full text of the bill http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?071+ful+HB2585

Here's a list of each committee member and email addresses:

Sherwood (Chairman) DelBSherwood@house.state.va.us
Griffith DelMGriffith@house.state.va.us
Kilgore DelTKilgore@house.state.va.us
Wright DelTWright@house.state.va.us

Here are some things you may want to mention in your email:

• Promotes tourism in Virginia from out of state motorcyclists that would spend significant time and money in Virginia to ride on Scenic Byways.
• Byways are slower, less traveled roadways.
• Would enhance the riders experience of riding on Scenic Byways.
• Gives partial autonomy to adult riders.

Delegate Janis is Patroning HB 2585 and is on this committee. No email is necessary, but if you would like to send a thank you note, his email address is DelBJanis@house.state.va.us.

Another item of note, HB 3077 (the penalty for not wearing an approved helmet or any helmet the same $25 civil fine as the current seatbelt code) that WAS scheduled to be heard Tuesday (1/30)in the Transportation Committee, has now been moved to the House Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee. It will likely be heard a week from Friday there, but there is no confirmation yet. I'll let y'all know as soon as we learn when it will be heard.

Please plan to make it to the House Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee on Friday (1/26) if possible and be sure to spread the word!
