New Helmet Law

A new law requiring helmets on those riding motorized scooters in Augusta county, went into affect Sunday.

The law passed in February by the Board of Supervisors, requires children under the age of 14 to wear a helmet when riding on or operating any type of motorized vehicle.

Lieutenant Glenn Hanger of the Augusta County Sheriff's Office says the new law will be strictly enforced. "Our intention is from a public awareness and safety standpoint, to give a warning, place the warn person, or the violator's name into what we call a field contact list. If that person is encountered a second time, he will be charged with the offense."

Lieutenant Hanger says people caught without helmets are committing a traffic violation.
